Therefore, Search Engine Submission is the key to a great SEO strategy, and its proper implementation. But, what exactly is search engine submission? And, how do you “submit” a website to a search engine?

Well, in this post we are going to answer all these questions as we take a look at what website submission is, and how you submit your website to search engines.

We will also be discussing about manual, and automated search engine submission, and also discuss about the top search engines where you should submit your website, i.e. search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Let’s get started!

What is Website Submission?

What is Search Engine Submission?

Website Submission is also known as URL Submission, Search Engine Registration, and Search Engine Submission. It is a process of web promotion, and internet marketing where you submit or supply the URL of your website, and webpages to search engines in order to get indexed, and listed.

This is done to make the search engines aware of your website, and to increase the rankings of your website or webpages.

Search Engine Submission is a great cost-effective SEO technique as well. By submitting your website, and pages to search engines for consideration, you can promote your website, and increase your website traffic, and online visibility.

Furthermore, it helps you to get a higher ranking in the search results of the major search engines, and gain more traffic. Moreover, it will also help you generate more awareness about your products, and services, as well as more prospects, generate more revenue, and build a strong brand identity online.

If you submit your webpages to search engines, your site gets quickly discovered by web spiders thus eliminating the need for web crawlers to find your website/page organically. Sounds good, right? But how do you actually do it?

You can submit your webpage or website to the search engines in either of these two ways – by submitting one page at a time, and indexing each, and every webpage individually, or by indexing each and, every webpage in bulk by submitting the Homepage URL, and thus submitting the entire site at once.

With the help of various webmaster tools available, you can easily submit one page at a time to search engines. Some of these webmaster tools are Bing webmaster tools, and Google webmaster central.

Bing Webmaster Tools by Microsoft helps you improve your search engine results ranking on Bing search results. Moreover, it can also help you analyze your site’s performance data, and you can make use of various free SEO tools.

Google Search Central (formerly Google Webmasters) is another great way to get your website listed on Google Search Engine. In 2018, Google renamed Google Webmasters to Google Search Central, and also made new changes to the user interface.

Offered as a free service, it helps you make your website discoverable on Google, and also check indexing status. Moreover, you get support for your website, testing tools, and support documentation.

It helps you verify that if Google can access your website, and the content on it, and makes it possible for you to submit new web pages or other URLs for Google to crawl.

Submissions also differ in the way they are done. This means that you can either manually submit the site or the webpages or submit them in an automated manner. When you manually submit site/pages, you are required to fill out individual forms.

And, when the same is done in an automated way by just submitting the site URL, you are required to fill out the information only once, and then this information is used to submit to a lot of search engines by special softwares designed for this purpose.

If you want to submit the entire site, you need to submit the home page of your website, to a variety of search engines.

This is different from the first method as this is a mass submission process, and when you submit the home page of your website, the rest of the process becomes automated, as the site gets listed in multiple databases at once, and gets indexed. Thus, the rest of the pages along with the home page are spidered.

However, it is worth mentioning that just getting listed is not enough for a better search results ranking. Many confuse Search Engine Submission with Search Engine Optimization. The former is about getting indexed, and getting your website listed with the search engines.

This simply doesn’t guarantee that your webpage will now rank higher than others. It just helps you to make the search engines aware of your website. On the other hand, search engine optimization is about optimizing, and altering your web pages so that they rank higher than your competition.

Thus, for a better search engine results ranking, and better online visibility, a well-designed, and implemented SEO Strategy is also needed.

Well, it’s not like your whole SEO strategy is a complete waste if you do not submit your website to search engines. It is because search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing among others will eventually be able to find your website or webpage on the web regardless of whether you submit manually or not.

However, experts still insist on, and recommend submitting your site using a sitemap because it helps you provide search engines with additional information about your site, which can help you have extra indexing data of your site.

Searh Engine Submission: Getting Started

Before you start submitting your website or a webpage to any of the major search engines, it is important to consider all the things that you need beforehand. To begin with, you need full access, and ownership of your website.

You must be wondering why is it so? Well, it is not a complete necessity to have backend access of your website but you may need to create a sitemap or a robot.txt file for your website later, and for that, it is important to be able to edit, and access your website.

Robots.txt or the robots exclusion standard or protocol helps the websites to communicate with the web by providing search engine crawlers with all the URLs they can get access to, on your website. If you have access to a website, it becomes much easier to add a sitemap or a robot.txt file.

Let us now discuss ways you get your website/pages listed on search engines. Here, we are going to discuss about how you can submit your website to the three major search engines – Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Let’s get started. Suppose you have a website that you want to get listed on all the major search engines, and the website is not already indexed in any of those search engines. If you want to get it listed on Google, you can do so by adding a sitemap in Google Search Console.

A Sitemap is basically a file or a list of pages that acts as a blueprint of your website, and helps search engines find, crawl, and index the content of your website by providing important information like the pages, multimedia content, and the interconnections between them all.

One of the easiest ways to find the sitemap of your website is to use a web crawling service like SEO Site Checkup. The tool will help you find the sitemap of your website just by entering the URL of your website.

Now, until recently, you could easily submit websites, and pages to Google with the help of their URL submission tool. However, the tool was discontinued in 2018, hence adding a sitemap in the Google Search Console is the only option left.

To begin with, the first thing you need to do is to verify ownership of the website, to prove that you own the website, and then create a sitemap for the website. If you don’t know how to do that, here’s a quick guide to verifying your site ownership, and creating a sitemap for your website.

When you are done with these two steps, go to the sitemaps section in Search Console. The next step is to enter, and submit the sitemap URL. And, just with these easy steps, your website is now submitted to Google. As simple as that!

And, if you just want to submit an individual page to google, you can do so by pasting the link to that page into the Google Search Console’s URL inspection tool. A message saying “URL is not on Google” will pop up if the page isn’t indexed. To index the webpage, click on “Request indexing”, and Google will index the page.

You can repeat these steps to ensure that the page is indexed. Now, when you’ll paste the URL of your webpage into the Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool you’ll get a confirmation saying “URL is on Google.”

Now let’s move on to Bing, and learn how to list your website on Bing. Unlike Google, Bing still has a public URL submission tool. You can use this tool to submit any website easily in seconds just by entering the homepage URL, and filling in the captcha. You can find this tool here.

However, it is recommended to submit your sitemap with the help of the Bing webmaster tool. The process isn’t that different either. It includes entering your homepage, and sitemap URLs, and a little more information about you, and the website. You can do so by clicking here.

And, since Yahoo pulls results from Bing, submission to Bing also means that you are automatically submitting your website to Yahoo as well.
