Work From Home – How To Be Both Productive And Happy?

Read Time: 4 minutes

As the world completes an entire year dealing with Covid-19, work from home is the new norm and will continue to do so.

Work from home has been a drastic change for many. It has brought in a mixed bag of both advantages and disadvantages, which continue to be hotly debated.

No matter what you think about it, the reality is – online work from home is here to stay. In fact, some companies have already begun experimenting with a semi-permanent model of work from home.

Future Of The Workspace

Led by the technological giants such as Amazon, Facebook and Twitter many companies feel that a work from home model is better for both, i.e. for the companies and for the employees in the long run.

Companies save the obvious cost of running an entire office building. Companies can save up on the rent, and the companies who own their premises can even lease them out or use them as an alternative space such as a warehouse.

Despite the business continuity and the crisis management models in place, many companies struggled to deal with the initial aftermath of the pandemic. Many believe that a permanent work from home model will save them this trouble and will prevent this from happening again.

Employee benefits are also being discussed. Saving on commuting and office attire is a major bonus. Many employees have also been able to shift back closer to their families and their loved ones. With the same, or even a greater level of productivity flowing in, work from home is the defining feature streamlining the occupational change in this decade.

However, this does not mean that there are no challenges to this change. Many have professed a disappearing boundary between the personal and the professional live. Superiors often expect their team to be constantly available as they are simply working from home. Sitting day in, and day out in front of a laptop, more so with reduced social interaction, is costing many their physical and mental health.

Thus, there is an active need to redefine and renegotiate the work space in order to ace work from home and to ensure health and happiness. Let’s discuss some work from home tips that can help you get started with this process.

Work From Home Tips For Productivity

Working from home effectively is not just about getting the job done. It is also about ensuring health and happiness at a very stressful time. Here are the key work from home tips that can help you achieve this.

Create A Space

Work from home online means that you no longer have a dedicated office space. Working from wherever such as the bed, the couch, or the kitchen table, though convenient – can lead to a lot of problems. It can hurt your back and neck, cause you to constantly shuffle around gadgets, and be an inconvenience to others you live with.

So, the first order of business should be to get a proper setup. If you are working from home for the foreseeable future, invest in a good table and chair. Many companies are also giving monetary compensation for the same, so look if your company has similar schemes and your work profile has similar entitlements. Defining a work space within the house will not only make the work smoother, but will also enable a work-home divide. Equally important are the software elements, such as the internet and a good VPN.

Renegotiate Boundaries

Working from home means renegotiating boundaries with housemates - including pets.

Work from home can be difficult to comprehend for many, such as for the spouses and for the kids, and even for the pets. They may assume that all you do is ‘sit on the laptop all day.’ It is therefore important to sit down with the fellow housemates and discuss your needs and boundaries.

This may include not disturbing you during your working hours, and also by taking care; for example by not making any noise during your meetings. Above all, it is also very important not to get angry or frustrated. All are working from home, and all very well understand that the occasional child popping in, unannounced is normal.

At the same time, it is also very important to reinforce work boundaries. Working from home doesn’t mean that you are be available 24/7. It is therefore a very good idea to politely yet firmly, to talk to your colleagues about work time limits. Keep the home and the work gadgets separate so that you can shut everything down once you are off the clock/grid.

Ask For Help

Don’t hesitate to reach out. No matter how experienced, senior or technologically adept you are, there are bound to be certain stumbling blocks for everyone.

Don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed to reach out and do ask for help if something is confusing you or troubling you. This is the time of unprecedented strain and stress for everybody involved, and sometimes a simple ‘mute’ button can feel like an incomprehensible calculus.

Discussing challenges and problems of work from home with colleagues can also help you come up with collaborative solutions that work for all. Social interactions are also essential to keep you motivated and connected.

Move Around

Utilize your breaks to get some exercise, preferably outdoors.

Utilize your breaks to get some exercise, preferably outdoors.

Don’t use your break from work to scroll social media or to watch TV. Use the opportunity to bust some moves with a home workout video, go out for a walk with your pet, or even cook a meal.

Even those who took the elevators every day during the usual office days will find their physical activity significantly curtailed during this work from home. It is thus up to you to ensure that you get a certain amount of physical activity or else take out some time for exercise daily.

Without the adequate exercise, working from home can become a chore, and your body make take a toll from all the hunching and the sitting around. So, even if it is just a quick walk around your yard or some stretches at the balcony, take some time out and move a little. You can always follow a workout routine or video to help you out.

Use Rewards

Work can be difficult in itself, even without the added weight of the pandemic thrown in. Thus entice yourself with rewards as it can motivate you and help you to complete projects quickly. Your rewards can be anything you like, from a small bar of chocolate to ten minutes of cuddle time with your pooch.

You can also break down your goal into smaller parts, and reward yourself for each part that you complete. The idea is to ensure that you remain motivated to do your work.

Remember that linking rewards to work doesn’t mean that you can only reward yourself after a work is completed. Sometimes, just no reason is a good enough reason to have a long hot bath or order some food or take away. It is all about striking a balance between happiness and productivity.
